Gaslamp City Square Trellis

Once known as the Stingaree District, the history of San Diego's Gaslamp district dates back to the late 1800's. This district's colorful history includes being the heart of San Diego's gambling halls, bawdy houses and opium dens.  Wyatt Earp, Ida Bailey, sailors visiting from other ports and the Chinese Railroad workers was a few of the people to note who the original visitors were in the 1880's.  Gambling and prostitution made San Diego a highly popular navy port.  In 1912, the city's officials cracked down on prostitution and so began the decline of this oh so popular neighborhood.

Recognized by the National Register of Historic Places, the Gaslamp is a 16.5 block neighborhood with 94 historically or architecturally significant structures.  For those who enjoy urban living, the Gaslamp has over 70 restaurants and nightclubs, shops, movie theaters, galleries lofts and offices to offer its residents.

The completion of Horton Plaza in 1985 fueled initial redevelopment activity.  Additional development is planned for this San Diego Downtown neighborhood includes 95,000 square feet of retail space, 334 hotel rooms and 364 residential units.  Gaslamp district residents enjoy easy access to downtown San Diego events including Street Scene, ShamRock, Taste of Gaslamp, Cinco in the Gaslamp and the Mardi Gras Celebration.
